Ibis believes that the global demand for silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers is growing, especially for use in the production of integrated circuits (ICs) used in electronic products such as desktop and laptop computers, servers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), navigation systems (GPS) and video game consoles. In addition, the semiconductor industry’s transition to 300-mm wafers appears to be an inflection point where SOI technology is being more widely adopted.
As a result, the world’s IC manufacturers are using more SOI wafers each year, and Ibis believes that these chipmakers will increasingly look to the silicon wafer suppliers—from whom they already purchase virtually all of their bulk silicon wafers—for production quantities of SOI wafers. That’s why Ibis has positioned itself as a supplier of oxygen implanters to the world’s silicon wafer manufacturers.
As the Ibis oxygen implanters are being integrated into the wafer production facilities and processes of the leading wafer suppliers, the resulting synergies are producing positive results. Ibis believes that, as production volumes increase in response to rising demand, SIMOX-SOI will prove to be the cost-effective solution for SOI wafers.
