Very old early IBIS hotel in need of a little refurbishment. Well situated in centre of town with undercover parking available for a small price very nearby. Heating in the room inadequate. Staff friendly with good fast checkin / check out.
we stop at the ibis stevenage every year for the southside wrestling show, and have enjoyed our stay for the last five years, and are made welcome as soon as me and my son get in the door,we enjoyed the clean and homely room with all it's coffee and tea making facilities
The positives: cost was reasonable and breakfast good with much choice. The hotel is situated in the shopping centre so central if on foot, a bit more difficult to find by car, even with a sat nav. We'd booked two nights as we were attending a wedding the following day and lived some distance away. After five hours (approx) of travel, we were very tired and chose to have an evening meal at the hotel. We went to the restaurant around 19:30 hrs; about 4 people were in there. We were greeted by a pleasant young girl who informed us that several food items were not available and she was on her own, looking after the kitchen, food orders and the bar and we would have to wait a while. We were told we could help ourselves to a hot drink but let her know what we had. This we did. Fortunately, the hot tea helped and we weren't about to keel over from hunger. Food was good when it came but air-condition cooled it down too soon for me. Other people came in and told the same as us; some left without ordering. I did feel a little sorry for the young girl but she remained pleasant throughout. There was a problem with the sink in our room, but once the receptionist came up and satisfied herself we were not making it up (both my husband and I had previously been down to say there was a problem), she kindly moved us to another room. There was a power cut on the day of the wedding. Although this was not the fault of the hotel (workman had cut through electrical cable), there was no generator to kick in. Walking up the stairs was not the problem for me, but in darkness in a place I was unfamiliar with was not nice. However, walking was an issue for another guest. There was an evacuation chair but apparently no-one trained to use it was there; this dear guest had to be carried down the stairs with their arms around the neck of a helpful male staff member whilst someone else tried to hold her legs; all this with only the aid of phone lights and a torch. The wedding ceremony was delayed but in the end, the beautiful bride came in to meet her handsome groom by candlelight. Thankfully, as a passage of scripture was being read, electricity was restored and the place erupted with praise to God. The issues did not deter from a great day; we sure won't forget it.
Friendly hotel. Central for everything, shops, trains, buses. Lot of activity in hotel with banqueting and conference rooms. We werebonn6th floor and didn't here a thing.bonus is tesco 24 hour is opposite selling food and drink and anything you might need
Ours was a twin room, supposedly with air con. However the air con unit was sited facing a wall within a small alcove in the room and therefore one tiny part of the room was quite cold and the rest, because the room was west facing, was hot and airless. The beds were extremely uncomfortable & sank in the middle. They were also pushed tight together becaus there was very little extra space in the room. The space between the toilet and the side of the shower was virtually non-existent; we are quite small but it was still very uncomfortable having to squeeze into the space. The evening meal was fine, but the breakfast was quite dried up and we had to wait a long time for finished items, such as the scrambled egg, to be replaced.
In hot weather we have never had such efficient air condtioning. We managed to set it so that it gave a quiet and cooling flow of air in very hot weather with virtually no noise. The hotel is well situated for access to the railway with relatively cheep fairs into London. £4 to park if you leave the car for the whole of your stay but the car park is poor.
Hotel is in a great location close to shops rail etc. and offers good facilities and pleasant rooms. There is also plenty of good parking in the nearby multistorey and the price is very reasonable. I didn't try eating in the restaurant but it looks good.
Unknown to us, IBIS had booked in a music event on the night we were staying. Rather than let us know in advance, we were only told as part of the check in process, when it was a bit too late to find somewhere else to stay for the night. Said music resonated loudly through the entire building, meaning offers to switch rooms were unhelpful. Eventually we had to leave shortly after 10.30pm because sleep was impossible. No refund or anything was offered to compensate for the inconvenience.
i found the staff at the IBIS Stevenage to be very friendly and professional. the hotel was clean and I had a good night's sleep followed by an excellent breakfast. I would recommend the hotel to anyone. very good value for money and very central and next to the train station.
I stayed for one night and the room was fantastic. The staff were very friendly - I went to the restaurant for something to eat around 8pm when they were serving dinner. I only fancied something small so I was offered anything from the lunch menu and they made it for me. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
I checked into room 311 I sat at the desk was overcome by the smell of mould. The paint was flaking off the wall and the window sill was wet with damp. I went back to reception and was moved to 414 apparently the even rooms have less of a problem. Paint still pealing mould in bathroom bit at least it didn't smell.
Star staff member Helen, bar and restaurant responsibility. Cosy bar and restaurant area. Good room, clean, good bathroom facilities. Very good value for money. Very happy to stay there again - not far from London.
Excellent value for money. Nice big and clean room. Tea and coffee in the room. Equipped with hairdryer. Would definitely recommend this hotel. Car park overnight for £4 for those who worries about car park.
I've stayed here before and will cover the good things first. It's clean, breakfast is a good selection of hot and continental fare on a help yourself basis. room is basic but what you would expect. The desk staff were welcoming - and took the trouble to advise of a party going on until midnight in the function suite, which in all honesty I didn't hear. I was however disturbed by the constant loud humming from some sort of boiler/motor/pump from above my room (top floor). Not a good nights rest and the bed was a little lumpy too. To compound this the light up room rate sign by the front door was proudly offering rooms £10 cheaper than I had paid when booking in January.
We have stayed in this hotel many times. It is clean and comfortable and has beds to die for, plus it is 5 minutes from the railway station, 5 minutes from Wetherspoons, for breakfast, although the hotel provides a restaurant if staying in is preferred. When visiting London we always stay in this hotel which is just a short train ride to Kings Cross, 20 to 45 minutes depending which train you catch.
Hotel itself was OK and not very special. But great support and assistance from frontdesk personnel is very much appreciated . Cleaning of room could be better. Breakfast is good and not short of things to choose from.
Visited for a family get together. Lived in Stevenage for 30 plus years before moving away. Ideally situated for transport links especially train with the railway station just a short walk away. Shops and the Old Town on the doorstep. What was disappointing was the noise in the room from children next door (not being naughty just could hear every word and chair being dragged about) A function/disco was also taking place so all the evening you would have had to put up with the pounding bass and music which was supposed to stop at 2300 - it didn`t. The room was as expected, clean, tidy, well equipped just a bit tatty at the edges. The hotel was not full so there was no need to put a guest next to a room with kiddies and or a family in it. Not a good stay because of the noise issues. Both reported. No action taken. Mind you stopping a function would be a bit much to ask!
Rooms and bedding are clean. The hotel does not provide a full bar menu at weekends which does seem a little perverse. The majority of the staff are very pleasant. The girl working in the bar on the Friday night was embarrassed by the pitiful menu and provided a salad to go with the pizza going above and beyond what she was expected to do.
Great thoughtful design and service for guests. Train access and timetables great to the capital. Good range of shopping and history easy walking. Nice and winter warm. Traveller catering just right for me.
We stayed only one night, but it was very convenient for us - 5-min walk from the train station & in the middle of town. The room was fairly clean, but with sticky floors. The shower was very good, so we both took a very nice hot shower. Walls are very thin, so it can get a bit noisy at times.
