Having booked weeks ago online, I had email saying I had a confirmed reservation so thought no more about it. I drove 600km to reach the hotel en route Uk to Iceland. The last 20km took me 2 hours due to roadworks. So I arrived at 6.20 pm shattered. I stood in line waiting at the desk and the woman said, no your reservation was only confirmed until 6pm (its in small print, not like the bold type saying confirmed reservation) so we have sold your room already. We are full. Go away. So I asked for help given a; I had a confirmed reservation and b; I was exhausted and c; I don't speak german. She said there were no rooms in hamburg due to a convention. There might be something at another ibis in some other random town. At this point I broke down and the husband came out. He said he has other rooms and if I wait till 7 he will be cancelling other people's reservations. After 7, they gave me a room but they charged a higher rate than I had booked. Given that their policy is rooms guaranteed until 6, this means they always had rooms available and it is just a ruse to get people to pay more than the reserved rate. It was an awful experience. I will never go to hamburg again and I will not use german ibis hotels if they are like that. My recommendation, unless you want to get yelled at and ripped off, stay away.
