After my original booking for a suite in Bordeaux' city centre was cancelled at the last minute, I was relieved to have found a room at the Ibis in Pessac on such short notice. I am hoping the price of the rather mediocre room (90 EUR/night) reflected the last minute booking. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere. Travellers without a car will find it frustrating to reach the hotel, as the bus that goes to the tram that goes into Bordeaux stops running shortly before 9pm.
Check-in was uncomplicated and the woman at the reception desk was friendly and helpful, showing us where to find bus and tram stops. I had asked for a room with two beds; in reality, the room had two mattresses. My travel companion and I attempted to separate the twin mattresses but were left with only about 20 cm between the two of us. Not what I expected when being assured the room would have two beds. The beds were however comfortable and clean.
The bathroom and the room itself are in need of an update; the decor and amenities felt quite dated. If you don't speak French, you will find nothing to watch on TV.
My checkout experience is what ultimately caused me to give it a total of 2 stars. I had booked online, giving a credit card number for reservation only, not for payment. I attempted to pay with a visa card, which was declined. I was puzzled by this information, as I had used this same card to book the room, pay for my flight, and taxis to and from the hotel. I then gave her my AmEx; also declined. I asked the woman to run the cards again, because there must be something wrong with their machines. She quickly became very rude to me as I tried to figure out how to pay for my stay, which I ultimately did with a debit card. After calling both credit card companies to ask why my card had been rejected, I was told that the receptionist had not attempted to "swipe" my cards and instead had inserted them into the card reader which required a chip and a PIN, something which the majority of American credit cards do not have. I am unsure whether this woman did not realize she needed to swipe the card or if the hotel does not have the proper technology to do so. In any case, there was no reason the cards should have been rejected, nor was there any reason to be treated so rudely.
Needless to say, I will not be staying here again.
