The pretty town of Avignon is steeped in unparalleled cultural heritage and history. Its past is closely intertwined with that of the Popes who moved here in the 14th century. Things to do in Avignon on a budget: we bring you a selection of five different things to see and do near your hotel, to help you explore the town on a budget.
Get lost in the winding little streets
Set off from the Pont de l'Europe bridge and step into the old town. Explore on foot or hop on the sight-seeing train to get to the Notre-Dame des Doms cathedral and the many 15th to 18th century mansions. The Hôtel des Monnaies and Hôtel de Ville buildings are must-sees.
The high seat of the papacy
Your next stop is the Palais des Papes, a majestic 14th century building and stunning architectural masterpiece. This palace was home to nine popes who transformed Avignon into the high seat of Christianity for close to a century. Peek inside their private apartments!
From the old town, move on to sit back and relax in the Jardin des Doms garden. Walkers have been enjoying the exceptional views here for 300 years. Despite its English layout and feel, this little slice of natural paradise has a thoroughly southern charm.
Climb the ramparts
There's nothing quite like a stroll along the ramparts for a free opportunity to soak up the atmosphere. Look out over Avignon from a 14th century building. The town and its ramparts are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Sur le pont d’Avignon…
No trip to Avignon is complete without stopping off at the Pont Saint-Bénézet, better known as the Pont d'Avignon bridge. The structure was swept away by the Rhône on numerous occasions, and was ultimately abandoned. The pass combined with the Palais des Papes is affordable for small budgets.
