Discover the hidden gems of Basel, city of history and culture

Cultural Capital of Switzerland
Jacob Park stadium, also called Joggeli - which has FC Basel as its resident team - is the largest football stadium in Switzerland. It hosts a large shopping centre, ideal for a spot of shopping before exploring the old town. A few minutes by public transport (by tram with line 14 or bus line 37) are enough to reach your destination. The streets of the old town reveal a contrasting architecture between half-timber framed houses and contemporary constructions designed by renowned architects. Take a moment to contemplate the red sandstone facades of the City Hall and of the Basel Minster Cathedral and enjoy a quiet stop along the Rhine among the trees of Solitude Park.
The oldest university town in Switzerland, Basel also has the highest concentration of museums in the country... nearly 40 in an area of 23 miles! The worldly renowned Museum of Fine Arts houses works by artists of the Upper Rhine Valley and the Netherlands Renaissance, as well as paintings by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Picasso and Léger. You can also admire the fascinating works by Jean Tinguely, one of the major Swiss artists of the twentieth century. If you plan your visit during the Carnival of Basel, in February-March, you can take part in one of the top fifty local festivities in Europe. Among the quirkiest participants of the parade are the “Cliques”, who march through the old town playing thepiccoloandBasler drum. The Carnival attracts tens of thousands of spectators annually.
