Cheap holidays in Rennes: a walk in the heart of the Breton capital

A Breton city that’s full of history
Brittany’s capital is an attractive destination whatever the season. Take yourself off there for a weekend: if you stay in one of the ibis hotels it won’t cost you the Earth. We recommend both of them because they’re centrally located beside the train station.

Gourmet delights on every street corner
The best way to explore Rennes’ ancient centre is on foot: it has lots of cobbled streets with an irresistible ambiance. Walk down Rue Saint-Georges and admire its wood-panelled homes. You’ll eventually reach Place du Parlement-de-Bretagne and its eponymous building. We highly recommend a visit because its interiors would be worthy of a palace. The town hall is another historic building which will surprise you with its Baroque architecture. It’s on the Place de la Mairie, as is the Opéra. Carry on walking down to the old town and you’ll spot the remains of fortifications: they’re as high as the sturdy “Portes Mordelaises” gateway.
Markets are open all year round in Rennes and they pop up everywhere: Place des Lices market, for example, will awaken your senses with its tasty regional produce. What would you sat to a glass of artisanal cider, a slice of Rennes’ own petit gris melon, a Breton russet apple or a local cake with almonds and candied fruit? If all this fresh air is making you hungry, you’ll have plenty of chances to fill up on savoury galettes and crêpes during your cheap weekend in Rennes. Start with a sausage galette – you can buy and eat one on the street in traditional Rennes style. Follow this on with a salted butter caramel crêpe. Old Rennes’ crêperies sell this delicious dessert at very reasonable prices in picturesque surroundings.
